For numerous reasons this Blog has been silent for nearly two years, but things have been continuing to happen in my addled mind and stuff to be produced on my crowded bench. So the fist couple of pictures are conversions from Timpo and Charbens Arab figures into Indian command at the turn of the 18th century, the matchlockmen behind them come from a number of sources including English Civil War musketeers. The Osprey book on the Battle of Assaye (1803) has three inspirational colour plates although I found reading the text a tad difficult. The idea is to produce an Indian army that can take 18th century and Napoleonic British armies, maybe with some French assistance.<br />
I really enjoyed making these even though I should by right be a major shareholder in Greenstuff. There are plenty of references and information on the web and it seems possible to paint the figures in as many colours as you wish from off-white for the poorer infantry to bright silks for the commanders. I obtained a book on Mughal paintings and used this as a guide when painting the flag, but to be honest most of the way I finished these came out of my head rather trusted source. I'm currently making civilian figures to act as Rebels for the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, but hope to return to these soon, I fancy the idea of some figures to represent Mysore regulars and rocketmen (sit down Elton) and elephants are hanging around in the shadows........... <br />
<br />
The Jacobites are the relatively new figures from Replicants, the loading Highlander being a conversion. More sometime soon, bye for now.<br />
<br />

Probably!</p><br /><p>I went to the Plastic Warrior Show at Richmond (UK) yesterday, helped out a bit with the setting up and taking down of tables. HELMET had a stall, manned by our boy - Jonny- while the lovely Mrs Kemp sold the entry tickets and was generally helpful to the paying public. Steve Weston had a number of new items including test shots of British Camel Corps of around 1885 from Armies in Plastic, and a new set of ACW Union soldiers (ACW) sorry didn't get the makers' name, but some of them looked sort of familiar.... Peter Cole of Replicants was also on hand with a new set of medieval foot soldiers from his Battle of Lewes project and four British Infantry from the Battle of Culloden, I helped a bit with the research for these, some of whom - spooky section coming n0w - are moulded with an additional grenadier head on the base to allow for head swaps, great stuff. There was also the usual selection of traders selling old and new (ish) plastics including Don Ducotte from Florida with his innovative "swappables".</p><br /><p>My good friend Nick came along with his wife, he is not a collector but he had seen the room where I paint and convert and have all my books and stuff, his verdict on that visit was that there were "elements of insanity here" and having seen the mass ranks of traders and collectors yesterday I feel that impression was confirmed and multiplied. It's sometimes interesting to get the observations of a complete outsider on how the hobby is perceived, not in a negative way but from a perspective that gives insight and might help in looking at what attracts newcomers to the hobby and perhaps importantly, what turns them off and prevents their becoming collectors, any thoughts?</p><br /><p></p><br /><p>A couple of pictures above, first two are my attempt to overcome the lack of Napoleonic line infantry, a long conversion project which inevitably means that someone (Hat has some in the pipeline I think) will bring some out soon. Most manufacturers are represented here they all have been given HELMET heads. The biggest problem was in cutting away a crossbelt on most figures and adding the bayonet to the remaining belt that the French fusiliers used, uniquely I think, throughout this period. The jackets themselves ended up as a sort of hybrid that I call "not quite the 1812 regulations", remember they are only toys.</p><br /><p></p><br /><p>The others photos are an experiment in producing a French Dromedary Corps Camelrider from Napoleon's Campaign in Egypt dated around 1800. The man is mainly HELMET with a Rose metal head and the beast if an old zoo model from Britains bought very cheaply on Ebay. All the saddle and equipment, which hides the fact that the camel is in fact a bactrian, is modelled in greenstuff. I'd like to do a few of these and have a skirmish game with mounted Mamelukes time and everything else permitting.</p><br /><p></p><br /><p>That's all, comments, queries and insults welcome.</p><br /><p></p><br /><p>Cheers</p><br /><p>Eric </p>Old Sillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00711483319553667661noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463199285349809321.post-34819537108490610662011-05-01T09:20:00.000-07:002011-05-01T09:48:22.462-07:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1gHYjb7FM4IOSZTzgPWjhMmhdrmZGa5Du7pwpAG7bh8l70AgYMqZP_9s3ccKSfj75O_M7w-dmlt9zfPPqw_0jqepyiPScsSeO8cWKJJgCnpO0R7hzJ083EU_NiDc4MqqKRti7m5LwtPjw/s1600/P1000336.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601784677082856210" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1gHYjb7FM4IOSZTzgPWjhMmhdrmZGa5Du7pwpAG7bh8l70AgYMqZP_9s3ccKSfj75O_M7w-dmlt9zfPPqw_0jqepyiPScsSeO8cWKJJgCnpO0R7hzJ083EU_NiDc4MqqKRti7m5LwtPjw/s320/P1000336.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggfphHNatURG43Kw60DcNdYX-ZSN4DeUpMrE19_hhXmxiC2IZnxPFqiD-4oOfqBMVlzYiHugHDXTyPbKK2dkpvrFpuQaaJgBXE_GIz35JmO0mXoJjg8ae5ZCG1CTaE72ikAlJvWwzyprDa/s1600/P1000334.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601784668633562658" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggfphHNatURG43Kw60DcNdYX-ZSN4DeUpMrE19_hhXmxiC2IZnxPFqiD-4oOfqBMVlzYiHugHDXTyPbKK2dkpvrFpuQaaJgBXE_GIz35JmO0mXoJjg8ae5ZCG1CTaE72ikAlJvWwzyprDa/s320/P1000334.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvXwo_zZ3pLB267t0VFjYp3ukeNxvoIXvs4Q4uI2BRl8YIxaDg8uMLCkoHCJmj94-af8XrTx5D5LtqcwcWHk39ppqct4Jn1Hmb2eaBZk9Y0L_YM37M9QoFKVSRnI6hhitCHQ9XZKdxayiK/s1600/P1000333.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601784664214491106" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvXwo_zZ3pLB267t0VFjYp3ukeNxvoIXvs4Q4uI2BRl8YIxaDg8uMLCkoHCJmj94-af8XrTx5D5LtqcwcWHk39ppqct4Jn1Hmb2eaBZk9Y0L_YM37M9QoFKVSRnI6hhitCHQ9XZKdxayiK/s320/P1000333.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq9OxRaD77ft7ie2S5XCcXs64MHLBYMbWsdICORsTrAm7tAxetOqGE9x889iCC7N1k9bYhVZnuj_gTXCnlsRQ_lvKtUAzLYzcbJ5f46hXIi9ap8xwJAyAtM6qeKpOs3oNjRoQzixwJ2D8i/s1600/P1000332.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601784654376128146" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq9OxRaD77ft7ie2S5XCcXs64MHLBYMbWsdICORsTrAm7tAxetOqGE9x889iCC7N1k9bYhVZnuj_gTXCnlsRQ_lvKtUAzLYzcbJ5f46hXIi9ap8xwJAyAtM6qeKpOs3oNjRoQzixwJ2D8i/s320/P1000332.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I really don't know what to say, it is well over a year since the last posting, if anyone wants to know the reasons for the lack of activity, and want to hear some hard luck stories, please contact me off-blog. In the meantime I have finally completed a project begun sometime in 2009, the end result can be seen in the photos above, a British limber team of around 1812.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I had previously finished the two drivers and their horses and the two other horses were converted but not painted. The men are simple constructs from HELMET spares and the horses are old Britains, two with new Lone Star heads. The Harness (tack?) was made from gift wrapping tape, miliput and a lot of foul language. The limber - not at all accurate but good enough for a country boy, is an adapted Imex ACW piece; the shafts are from steam-bent bamboo and there are some additions to the box from red wine bottle foil painted black.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>The gun is from A Call to Arms.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I drilled two hooves on each horse and pinned and glued these two animals at a time to the plastic card base. The linking harness is lengths of picture frame wire with the end loops from thinner copper wire, these were super glued to metal pegs driven into each horse at the conversation stage. The wheel pair was completed and ground work for them and the limber before the lead pair were fixed. The whole assembly phase took about 4 hours and nearly drove me mad..................</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>The base is just over 12 inches long for oldies like me and around 310 mm for the younger ones. I read that at Waterloo the horse artillery 9pdr teams had eight horses, making a team of four is big and complex enough. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>We took plenty of photos this morning so should be posting again soon........fat hope.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>All the best,</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Eric </div><br /><div></div></div></div></div>Old Sillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00711483319553667661noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463199285349809321.post-83882615273362548842009-12-29T06:55:00.000-08:002009-12-29T07:19:13.387-08:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPmRdCYCZoD1eLv9msLvqjmH659Y-p8Nb4GRNd9P5RsesICfw13PgppY8PohvE0JqaMd21gj_PZBcX_bA_mvDcWXZ4a3r8E76-qvREbLJxlSm6CoimGsope4E65pxI9tMBrv6Z8bZpkSLa/s1600-h/DSC02242.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420672654711221314" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPmRdCYCZoD1eLv9msLvqjmH659Y-p8Nb4GRNd9P5RsesICfw13PgppY8PohvE0JqaMd21gj_PZBcX_bA_mvDcWXZ4a3r8E76-qvREbLJxlSm6CoimGsope4E65pxI9tMBrv6Z8bZpkSLa/s320/DSC02242.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUejDOwocYHhUfbGcCn3EmZSvosnfVoFutkb6im6Ud-8D6Rs4ZGRYbPuIQnNtZ46zPXuY4gZsf1CHfF4u6XaC03TybmCHw8pe53ZRX7Xw9abEuXy65FXcnR-rEHcxOpadVfrVp-uYKUgxy/s1600-h/DSC02237.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420672652840743490" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUejDOwocYHhUfbGcCn3EmZSvosnfVoFutkb6im6Ud-8D6Rs4ZGRYbPuIQnNtZ46zPXuY4gZsf1CHfF4u6XaC03TybmCHw8pe53ZRX7Xw9abEuXy65FXcnR-rEHcxOpadVfrVp-uYKUgxy/s320/DSC02237.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivSHAoE5rX7zHINQ52LjoKFBJjrxo_uZxKw35SjmEk613qYObNB7sCnTf6Xs_zZu-NazaKfm8fyhWuyNGXQrWMxRk_C7BqiUjqLTpx_MYsFVZSdBf88JVV8zl88was48Nsic3SIk-AKCvO/s1600-h/DSC02236.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420672646445038066" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivSHAoE5rX7zHINQ52LjoKFBJjrxo_uZxKw35SjmEk613qYObNB7sCnTf6Xs_zZu-NazaKfm8fyhWuyNGXQrWMxRk_C7BqiUjqLTpx_MYsFVZSdBf88JVV8zl88was48Nsic3SIk-AKCvO/s320/DSC02236.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaqstI8yizjs-D8oXDGTZPlFR839PrdFiE3msMRLBdagIYGP-hS696I3ove9P7ETAFK3q1bhDt0mUfXrmdn0kxXJ5979aFVabjdR-xw-EIs20VKmAe92x_vh052qGTE63NcxI6OyKb6voX/s1600-h/DSC02223.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420672634075865330" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaqstI8yizjs-D8oXDGTZPlFR839PrdFiE3msMRLBdagIYGP-hS696I3ove9P7ETAFK3q1bhDt0mUfXrmdn0kxXJ5979aFVabjdR-xw-EIs20VKmAe92x_vh052qGTE63NcxI6OyKb6voX/s320/DSC02223.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAdgh69O4zVdrY1YiPod5gWef9PYpAqLzMdK7ofibpSKPX10Xh2BcHjgDBQ4RPVruLK5v4j_5qf55hc5sV9h-1l30TKFFN962uciyBY5nuVEhxTFyQgTL36tt2Hx2xmD7uTnBZVDb4nDEz/s1600-h/DSC02215.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420672629344155378" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAdgh69O4zVdrY1YiPod5gWef9PYpAqLzMdK7ofibpSKPX10Xh2BcHjgDBQ4RPVruLK5v4j_5qf55hc5sV9h-1l30TKFFN962uciyBY5nuVEhxTFyQgTL36tt2Hx2xmD7uTnBZVDb4nDEz/s320/DSC02215.JPG" border="0" /></a><br />Some more pictures from the Boxing Day <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">wargame</span>, episode 1 published yesterday<br /></div><div> </div><div>Picture 1 shows French Guard Foot Artillery deploying with Guard Infantry in the background, the latter comprise a mixed company of Fusilier Grenadiers (<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">AIP</span>, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Aifix</span> and Hat conversions) Old Guard Grenadiers in campaign dress (<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Airfix</span> with <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">ACTA</span> leg-extensions (!) and Hat with <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Airfix</span> heads, and, four Old Guard Foot <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Chasseurs</span> (Hat conversions). However as this is a toy soldier Blog and not another of those that allow the author to sound off on their favourite subject (themselves) I shall limit my defence to the fact that I needed to find gainful, full-time employment and following a period of contract work in the Autumn, I started a five day week at the end of November. All this has meant that I have not been able to focus on HELMET Soldiers at all, nor this Blog. Excuses over.</div><div> </div><div>I have been painting <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Napoleonics</span> in my limited spare time in order to have a decent sized <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">wargame</span> starting on Boxing Day. I tend to paint the British with an eye <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">to</span> the War of 1812, so generally light on troops that were in both America and Europe in the period, but more of that later.</div><div> </div><div>I took the opportunity of <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">attending</span> the London Toy Soldier Show in early December, as a punter and not a trader, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, my wallet took a hard pounding, mostly on the new Harpers Ferry figures by <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Replicants</span>, bought from the ever friendly Steve Weston, I also picked up some useful bits and bobs, <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">spare</span> heads and stuff for future conversions. Finally I <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">had</span> a brief chat with a fellow converter ending in an agreement to produce some <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">figures</span> for a possible Siege of Vienna, 1683, game sometime soon............. more news later.</div><div> </div><div>I also bought, via mail order, a box of the new(<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">ish</span>) <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">Victrix</span> Napoleonic British Infantry in hard plastic kit form. <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">These</span> are great with terrific characterisation and detail, the downside is that they are large figures and will not fit with any of my existing regiments. I guess they could be used <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">separately</span> as skirmish pieces.</div><div> </div><div>So to the pictures. Our son, back from Uni, and I try to start a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">wargame</span> each Boxing Day, and these few photos show the start of that event, if people are interested I'll post more to show how the game develops. We use our own simple rules which are still sort of in development, we need simplicity due the the large (<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15">ish</span>) number of figures we deploy and the need to keep the game moving along.</div><div> </div><div>The first picture shows Jonathan - the new Corsican Ogre - beginning to set up the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16">Frenchies</span>, I took this photo without him knowing, or so I thought. He took the second <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_17">picture</span>, of yours truly, setting up the gallant allies, <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_18">definitely</span> without my knowledge. So ignoring the ugly old gentleman in the background, it does show the very basic terrain,a crossroads with a scatter of walls and ruined buildings. The third picture shows some of the first British to arrive, Light Infantry and Rifles on open order scree a Foot Artillery Battery, a weak company of Redcoats and some Light Cavalry acting as escort to the general, in this instance Lord Peregrine <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_20">D'Arcey</span> and his <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_21">servant</span>, a corporal in the Staff Corps.</div><div> </div><div>Picture 4 shows some French skirmishers, dismounted Vistula Lancers and Foot Dragoons, part of a screen also comprising a full <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_22">company</span> of Light Infantry, apart from the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_23">Replicant</span> officer these are conversions from Accurate and Armies in Plastic with head swaps and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_25">greenstuff</span> additions. Finally the French begin to arrive in force, Guard and Line Infantry in the background along with a couple of guns, Dragoons in the middle instance and Hussars in the foreground. Behind the Dragoons is the Emperor himself with his escort, backed by a half squadron of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_27">Mamelukes</span> and a pair of giant pink hands which could cause problems later. Most of us in this hobby contact our fellow enthusiasts via phone or <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Internet</span> and this trip and the good old face-to-face communication that took place was truly inspirational, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and learned a great deal. Thanks Mike. </div><div> </div><div>So, full of new <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">enthusiasm</span> I returned with a plan to paint up some <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Napoleonics</span> for a Summer <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Wargame</span> in the garden with our Boy before he returns to university. I was determined to complete some outstanding projects and at the same time start some new ones. Prior to seeing Mike I had always converted two figures and then painted them, then two more conversions, followed by the painting then so on. Now I am determined to prepare or convert all the figures in the unit and then paint them in one long painting exercise, although I still only paint them two at a time. This seems to speed things up and encourage me to <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">finish</span> what I have begun.</div><div> </div><div>Most of the pictures here are of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Italeri</span> models, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Mamelukes</span> and British Light Dragoons, but first off a couple of British Hussars, from the 15<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">th</span> Light Dragoons, they are straight up and down HELMET kits, and are the first two of a squadron <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">strength</span> unit, Our squadrons comprise an officer, trumpeter and 16 men. I painted the officer and trumpeter of the Light Dragoons shown in the next two pictures over a year ago and they have been leading a phantom squadron ever since. Happily this sad state of affairs has been rectified and they now have the satisfaction of knowing that their shouted orders and tootling trumpet calls are now heard by 32 little plastic ears and responded to by 16 plastic men and horses. I really like these figures and have done very little to them, merely cutting of the right hands of some and re-fixing (pinning and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">glueing</span>) at different angles to add variety.</div><div> </div><div>Some of the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">Mamelukes</span> have had the same treatment, and I have added firearms and blunderbusses to a few. The French <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Napoleonics</span> are reasonably well catered for with two Italeri sets, which although of some <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">inaccuracies</span> are pretty good material, however there is nothing for the Brits or other nationalities, so I decided to make a 4 horse team that I could use <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">for</span> the Napoleonic War, The War of 1812, The Crimea and anything else in between. So far it has been a labour of hate, but with some useful <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">learnings</span> on the way. The first two photos show the (nearly) completed drivers and their mounts. The men are simple adaptions from HELMET spares, nothing really special about them, however the horses were the real problem. The third picture shows construction of the four horses before painting, as you can see I did head swaps on the driver's horses, and also a tail swap on one for a bit of variety and to use heads that had moulded reins. Much of the simplified harness uses <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">milliput</span> and/or <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">greenstuff</span>, but my <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">real</span> problems arose from my opting to use decorative gift wrapping <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">tape</span> for the main strapping. My (obviously logical) reasoning being that this was <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">pre</span>-cut- although I had to cut it in half lengthwise, as it was too wide - so I would have to do less tedious cutting, secondly I chose the metallic type as I knew this to be stronger.</div><div> </div><div>Alas dear reader I could not find a glue that would stick <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">the</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">damn</span> stuff to the plastic of the horses. Super glue wouldn't touch it, I spent a whole evening, the air rent with numerous foul expletives, sticking my fingers together and to the horses, even when I thought I had <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">achieved</span> success as soon as I put the ****<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">ing</span> thing down, the joints slowly and <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15">provocatively</span> slid apart, cue more swearing. Eventually I used a contact adhesive and a couple of coats of strong varnish. Learning Point? "Check what glues will work on the proposed materials before construction work begins, and try not to swear too much in the course of what <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16">should</span> be an enjoyable hobby."</div><div> </div><div>The fourth picture is a better photo of two of our new Prussian Hussar kit, it and the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_17">Uhlan</span> should be up on the website this week - please spend generously.</div><div> </div><div>Lastly a picture of some more of my War of 1812/ Peninsular War British Infantry, these are made from a variety of bits see if you can guess the source. A mounted figure to use as a basis.</div><div>2. How to make and fix the wings</div><div>3. Weaponry - of which there is quite a lot.</div><div> </div><div>Taking those in order, the obvious starting point foe the figure is a mounted Knight isn't it? Well I certainly thought so, they've got armour and are in the right sort of position. Therefore I got some cheap bits via <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">ebay</span>, and stated to study the Osprey book on the subject, and guess what, even if you want to produce a rough approximation of Polish armour you need to almost completely re-sculpt the armour. The two top pictures show this as well as the ones in the previous Blog, all I was left with was the top half of the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">cuirass</span>, the rest is <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Milliput</span> or <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Greenstuff</span>. I used a lot of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Milliput</span> as the weight counters the top-heaviness of the completed model. The <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">heads</span> are from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Maros</span> in both cases. The clothing, what you can see of it and the animal skin are from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">Greenstuff</span>, it all took a long time.</div><div> </div><div>I pondered long and hard over the wings, and discarded a number of options before settling on this solution. The Osprey source shows that in the 1680's they were attached to the rear of the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">cuirass</span> not by a series of straps as I had imagined also they were (obviously I guess) very light, so these are made from thin copper tube carefully bent to shape, with feathers <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">from</span> thin card fixed with impact adhesive. The feathers for each wing are made in one piece, I had thought to make individual feathers, but luckily a shaft of common sense hit my brain and things were made slightly easier. The wings are attached to the figure by sliding the copper tubes over pins that are fixed and then bent at right angles so they <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">are</span> vertical, this can be seen in the first pic above. A bonus of this method is that the wings can be removed and packed away as they are quite fragile.</div><div> </div><div>Weapons, this started well and ended badly. The sabre if from HELMET spares as are the pistols attached to the front of the saddle, the pained model also uses our pistol holsters, the lance is brass and the pennon from painted paper. So far so good, then disaster...... The <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">painted</span> fig should have a long straight sword slung from the saddle under the left thigh, I just couldn't get one to fit as I left this part much too late, When I started the second model, this was one of the first jobs I tackled, see photos above - the blue feet by the way are there because on completing the armour I noticed that <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">the</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">Britains</span> knight no longer looked right, mainly because one leg was about 8mm longer that the other, so major amputation and transplant surgery was necessary.</div><div> </div><div>So main lessons were, research the basis figure well before spending money and starting converting, be clear from the outset how to construct the various components, and lastly make sure everything will fit together in the right order to avoid last minute frustrations.</div><div> </div><div>Next I'll complete the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15">WIP</span> figure and make perhaps one or two more and then think about producing some Turks by way of opposition, <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16">then</span> more War of 1812???</div><div> </div><div>Comments and feedback welcome</div><div> </div><div>Cheers</div><div> </div><div>Eric</div><div> </div><div> </div></div></div></div></div>Old Sillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00711483319553667661noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463199285349809321.post-48730071027494625262009-03-30T02:28:00.000-07:002009-03-30T03:02:04.233-07:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdHNQ-2mAnUFC8gsIX2MuCDOQc97J32dvrVr693djhCvZ0PtdzKO7Rn_4EmfGjmxf6Umq1laIjO_0P3JoaxSwX-0aq0DZqSI3mLnjoSIQeco1E3p5hS-vvIYBNZyMUAA-rtaIxSHy6vvFa/s1600-h/Marlborough+Blog+pics+013.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318910960057781954" style="FLOAT: left; I will describe how I built this beast, what went well and what went wrong, next time...................</div><div> </div><div>The next two photos show how I built some of the musket armed figures shown in the previous Blog, with another pic here as a reminder. In actual fact these two chaps are the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">first</span> of my Monmouth Rebels, the construction principles remain the same, however. These two are from the Accurate <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">AWI</span> Militia set. I chose them for a number of reasons:</div><div>* They both have flintlocks - <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">apparently</span> Monmouth was fairly well supplied with these.</div><div>* They are wearing long coats, which although of the wrong design can be easily adapted to reflect the style of the 1680's.</div><div>* They are wearing breeches and stockings, so no work needed there.</div><div> </div><div>They <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">both</span> needed to have different headgear, the one on the left had his hat cut off at forehead level and a new on added, the brim is <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">Milliput</span>, a flattened ball of the stuff pressed onto the flat surface left after cutting, the rest of the hat was built from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">greenstuff</span>, all very simple. His colleague has a metal head made by <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">Maros</span>. The plastic head was removed and a hole drilled in the neck to take the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">metal</span> stub on the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">Maros</span> head, after a dry run to m<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15">ake</span> sure everything fitted the new head was fixed with superglue. Simultaneously I have embarked on yet another new period, <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">focusing</span> initially on what is generally known in <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">the UK</span> as the Monmouth Rebellion. Very briefly, this was an attempt in 1685 by the illegitimate son of Charles II, James Duke of Monmouth to bring about regime change and topple his uncle, King James II. Activities were centered in the West Country and ended after a brief campaign at the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Battle</span> of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Sedgemoor</span> where Monmouth and his army were defeated.</p><p>I chose this period because I find it of great interest personally and it is another "little war" that lends itself to re-creation in 54mm scale and there is a surprising amount of <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">information</span> available on the uniforms colours and organisation of the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">protagonists</span>, finally the regulars as seen in these photos can, I hope be used in other theatres such as Tangier against the Moors and in Europe against the armies of other nations. </p><p>What we show above represents a company of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Kirke's</span> Regiment from the army of James II, they are mostly produced by converting A Call to Arms <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">ECW</span> figures, although there are some <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">AWI</span> models from Accurate and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">ECW</span> from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">Replicants</span>. So I wrote a new set, what we wanted was rules that were simple, but realistic and made us behave in ways that encouraged 19<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">th</span> century tactics, so far we are reasonably pleased with them, but it's early days................. </div><div> </div><div>So we used all our War of 1812 figures, the British number 70 Regulars with a dozen Riflemen and a foot artillery gun, the Americans had 88 <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Regulars</span> including 12 Rifles plus 4 cavalrymen and 10 Militia and a gun with crew, The scenario was set around the need to capture a cross roads with the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">redcoats</span> defending and the Americans attacking in two columns. The first two pictures show some of the defenders lining a fence and occupying a ruined cabin. The idea behind these Brits is to also use them in Peninsular War battles, as soon as Hat release their <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">forthcoming</span> French light infantry.</div><div> </div><div>The long haired kid is my son, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Jonny</span>, here commanding the US forces with more dash and aggression than normal. The last two photos show the two American attack <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">columns</span> the first is a mixed force of Regulars, Marines and Militia, the second is made up of two complete companies of the 18<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">th</span> Infantry following their colours and general. </div><div> </div><div>The first few moves saw the US artillery consistently miss it's targets, and the boldly advancing Militia fire a volley and then retreat with alacrity! The US Regulars met with greater success, and although taking casualties as they advanced (our new rules say that no-one can move and fire in the same move - so you have to take calculated risks around gaining ground or causing casualties) forced the British Riflemen to retreat and threatened to outflank the British line.</div><div> </div><div>More next time</div><div> </div><div>Cheers</div><div> </div><div>Eric<br /><br /><br /></div><div></div></div></div></div>Old Sillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00711483319553667661noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463199285349809321.post-75270177348760851192008-12-07T07:21:00.000-08:002008-12-07T08:08:09.968-08:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh46e7rZFHH6PgmRUquGgpqqsVO8DC5F2Y6eEbi5Byr23bNB7_Vai-NtyjSmgK0o1j45_e43vJ0cbAv35IpgISSCNJdBFynoiUY8PiICSaXdM5OCUOBvM8wmUg1GGtxWyDdH1lmmxgOZFgo/s1600-h/DSC01987.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277069158451963730" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh46e7rZFHH6PgmRUquGgpqqsVO8DC5F2Y6eEbi5Byr23bNB7_Vai-NtyjSmgK0o1j45_e43vJ0cbAv35IpgISSCNJdBFynoiUY8PiICSaXdM5OCUOBvM8wmUg1GGtxWyDdH1lmmxgOZFgo/s320/DSC01987.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI4g_wzofq8HF9p7osC35hKEg30oC_akLAMOz1n5r7E5hqWsAQHRtvtK-0dlrn9U6YZLaQQzeoNCvIomFE9hfP4eZweQRRHb2UtZbZ8NFUVBcD0MDQ2n9baBFArdW-TrsDxLzuUHeHPghf/s1600-h/DSC01984.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277069152872812242" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI4g_wzofq8HF9p7osC35hKEg30oC_akLAMOz1n5r7E5hqWsAQHRtvtK-0dlrn9U6YZLaQQzeoNCvIomFE9hfP4eZweQRRHb2UtZbZ8NFUVBcD0MDQ2n9baBFArdW-TrsDxLzuUHeHPghf/s320/DSC01984.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYfvNvc5I3ZBLOHeP8FrD_EXV1xqR-MeF5_eMUCSAb061SUE9fVD1FomkHWwJRsIj2FDV5S9Jp_p1BZQMVk6oic5NGWx6P7liGjVkSe66feXQ9w65_9HGdSbzcDQGUE_W1Afc28SfFR-sr/s1600-h/DSC01983.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277069149884627106" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYfvNvc5I3ZBLOHeP8FrD_EXV1xqR-MeF5_eMUCSAb061SUE9fVD1FomkHWwJRsIj2FDV5S9Jp_p1BZQMVk6oic5NGWx6P7liGjVkSe66feXQ9w65_9HGdSbzcDQGUE_W1Afc28SfFR-sr/s320/DSC01983.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6ID35hi3SA7oPThpFo3IQiepVyva2d2nVxItPnZnxRvwIHXEpIC3aZ_9gVb9ef3MdUCZ_JGimihpckK6osanBtD7dSdo0Iplfew0X5UKEz6rJiSfgc3p3by9srs7AHxB_Gsp41UgssArB/s1600-h/DSC01980.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277069144364012866" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6ID35hi3SA7oPThpFo3IQiepVyva2d2nVxItPnZnxRvwIHXEpIC3aZ_9gVb9ef3MdUCZ_JGimihpckK6osanBtD7dSdo0Iplfew0X5UKEz6rJiSfgc3p3by9srs7AHxB_Gsp41UgssArB/s320/DSC01980.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>Hello again to all those out there in toy soldier land, here we go with another Blog. Before I describe the pictures I'd like to mention a couple of points. Firstly a huge <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">thank you</span> to all those who mailed in comments <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">after</span> the last Blog, they were a good mix of the positive and the critical, and hopefully I <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">shall</span> bask in the glory of the former and reflect and take action on the latter, as I said I'd like this to be as interactive as possible, so please write in.</div><div>The second item is a reflection on the current state of our hobby. As HELMET Soldiers we attended the London Toy <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Soldier</span> Show yesterday, and although <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">attendance</span> was good our takings were very poor and all the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">other</span> dealers I spoke with had a similar experience. There were plenty of orange carrier bags around so hopefully Steve Weston had a good day, however the cost of hiring two tables, and paying for petrol and car parking meant that we barely covered our costs, I guess we'll have to have a good long think about the number of shows we plan to attend in 2009, but we won't be giving up yet.</div><div>Some of the feedback I received last time asked for a more detailed description of the conversion, so I show a photo of a completed American Militia officer, War of 1812 vintage, prior to painting. The tools and equipment used were a sharp hobby knife, some brass wire, superglue, a small electric drill ( not critical but very useful) and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">greenstuff</span> modelling putty. I chose a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Replicant</span> mule handler as the basis for the conversion and did the following nasty <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">things</span>, cut off his head and left hand and removed the whip from his right. I carefully re-carved two small sections of fringing <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">after</span> the whip had gone, and <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">drilled</span> a hole through the hand where the whip had been big enough to take a musket, and, as it's best to complete all fixing first, I also drilled a hole in the neck and the left wrist.</div><div> </div><div>The new <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">head</span> is from a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">CTS</span> Mexican round hat cavalryman, and the hand holding the pistol is off an Accurate American Revolution militiaman. These are then drilled in the neck and wrist respectively to take short lengths of brass wire. As this type of plastic is technically <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">unbonbable</span> as there is no solvent, joins have to be <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">pinned</span> and glued, so the new head and hand are fixed to the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15">superglued</span> wire and pressed home firmly. I the glued a HELMET French musket into the hole in the right hand. I then set the figure aside for the glue to set.</div><div>Next I mixed a small amount of putty. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16">Greenstuff</span> comes in yellow and blue strips and must be <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_17">mixed</span> to a consistent green colour to become a sticky putty. I wrapped two short sausages of the stuff one around the neck and the other around the left wrist, I then <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_18">sculpted</span> a new collar and cuff to the hunting shirt, this also <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_21">strengthens</span> the glued join. I put a blob of putty on the crown of the hat which I carved to the shape of a top hat with the side of my knife, and made a cockade on the left hand side with a tiny flattened ball of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_22">greenstuff</span>, I made a sash with trailing <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_23">ends</span> a<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_24">nd</span> a knot from a "snake" of putty and carved in creases and fringes with my knife. Finally I added a pouch on his right hip from a short <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_25">crossbelt</span> all out of putty although the photo does not show this clearly, the picture does show all the different <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_26">parts</span> including the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_27">greenstuff</span>, believe it's much easier to describe than to do.</div><div> </div><div>OK, a quick romp through the other photos. First some English Civil War <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_28">dragoons</span> from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_29">Replicant</span> and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_30">ACTA</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_31">pieces</span> converted pretty much as above but with new metal muskets instead of plastic.</div><div> </div><div>Next some Napoleonic British marines, I have a habit of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_32">prequelling</span> new release by <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_33">laboriously</span> converting stuff just prior to someone releasing some in ready made form and these are another example, The officer is the old <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_34">Aifix</span> figure with missing <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_35">crossbelt</span> replaced and a new <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_36">Timpo</span> head, the next two are <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_37">Replicant</span> Austrians with new heads and slight changes to uniform details, the last ids the old <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_38">Replicant</span> marine firing upwards, altered to a more normal firing position by cutting at the waist and re-fixing at a different angle ad <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_39">resculpting</span> the jacket and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_40">crossbelts</span> in <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_41">greenstuff</span>.</div><div> </div><div>Finally <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_42">some</span> French Old Guard. The first four from the left are metal figures from Irregular, in my opinion, (<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_43">FWIW</span>) I think these are great models, all I've done is add a bayonet to the fourth man from the left. They are joined by two from the slightly disappointing set by <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_44">Airfix</span> with full dress plumes and cords added to the bearskins to match the Irregular models.</div><div> </div><div><span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_45">That's</span> all for now, all <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_46">comments</span>, questions and feed back encouraged!!!!</div><div> </div><div>Cheers</div><div> </div><div>Eric </div></div></div></div>Old Sillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00711483319553667661noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463199285349809321.post-34977366075468614442008-11-22T07:21:00.000-08:002008-11-22T07:59:11.936-08:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcePNsxW1DywcPzhx3wHFlMDhONnEgAkmHjucwvtY_mnG7EjXwhLw_31MqUeZvrvL-BuI33AEJYahEfKNpWcIvszi4GLBjtGFbZvMe0yKnSYfhfOZaCP5ZDOpy3fWikambkIOZ1B_xW7Tn/s1600-h/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+013.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271503130719009970" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcePNsxW1DywcPzhx3wHFlMDhONnEgAkmHjucwvtY_mnG7EjXwhLw_31MqUeZvrvL-BuI33AEJYahEfKNpWcIvszi4GLBjtGFbZvMe0yKnSYfhfOZaCP5ZDOpy3fWikambkIOZ1B_xW7Tn/s320/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+013.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigzy85J8Bk0-3dgvYOHS9g01ibtEDvVpWjgEXyvZhCppX0CSXIf_IwJHwLY6n61KVxU0UxJg49qUGaj5nyJ6BNwma4UabGReiS0bskDbZEdAEszZ5savbPdm6jc-r3Dpijhgkc5zgb0OBV/s1600-h/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+017.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271503125165709410" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigzy85J8Bk0-3dgvYOHS9g01ibtEDvVpWjgEXyvZhCppX0CSXIf_IwJHwLY6n61KVxU0UxJg49qUGaj5nyJ6BNwma4UabGReiS0bskDbZEdAEszZ5savbPdm6jc-r3Dpijhgkc5zgb0OBV/s320/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+017.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjq1LGMimXor3mucXn3iwHQ_ffhVzyEQW9DkGi0FG7G0f_ClIMq8HLTPTm7MrP9wpmDNMF90Ey3uwU2BCxInfLS4pjT1ad8S7erBUizG1CNmrlR2cp42xD7ukgN7jOYLm0gxkKhew4p0eN/s1600-h/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+015.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271503124462228050" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjq1LGMimXor3mucXn3iwHQ_ffhVzyEQW9DkGi0FG7G0f_ClIMq8HLTPTm7MrP9wpmDNMF90Ey3uwU2BCxInfLS4pjT1ad8S7erBUizG1CNmrlR2cp42xD7ukgN7jOYLm0gxkKhew4p0eN/s320/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+015.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdqqdS7vXqdZz5hsbm7ETVvP2Sa5Fa08NPV-odJ2LB-1ZMRQ4hrbdCAwVOs3nFZzQk2rTGa82LWFGYVZl2E9F5PjGePcMuZHFNwXvLeQo1VPeRQVXDgqmcyrks2B4udz5aRCv132WsI7UJ/s1600-h/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+021.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271503117528410066" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdqqdS7vXqdZz5hsbm7ETVvP2Sa5Fa08NPV-odJ2LB-1ZMRQ4hrbdCAwVOs3nFZzQk2rTGa82LWFGYVZl2E9F5PjGePcMuZHFNwXvLeQo1VPeRQVXDgqmcyrks2B4udz5aRCv132WsI7UJ/s320/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+021.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdDNmNEMKKFmygZoV7OfU77uui2vcDGlFsshDWe3UBVJTDaH0FCjyJ9slo-wIEJV7pvb-EYlASnex1mHAag8jvF4RnTOqvKTVKzNwSxRP8XDghzt5LsB7yZ1jzJ5UhBUA4I4yF-dPLa_Ru/s1600-h/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+020.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271503114201406786" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdDNmNEMKKFmygZoV7OfU77uui2vcDGlFsshDWe3UBVJTDaH0FCjyJ9slo-wIEJV7pvb-EYlASnex1mHAag8jvF4RnTOqvKTVKzNwSxRP8XDghzt5LsB7yZ1jzJ5UhBUA4I4yF-dPLa_Ru/s320/Blog-americans+with+flags,+full+helmet+company+020.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div></div><br /><p>There you thought the effort two weeks ago was just a flash in the pan, eh? Well here we are then, two in a row. We've just come in from the garden where we took the pictures, and pretty cold it is too! More War of 1812 stuff I'm afraid, I'm going to carry on with this until the end of the year and then start or return to something different for 2009. We are planning a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">wargame</span> with the 1812 forces probably on Boxing Day, we'll take some pictures during the battle and if they are any good we'll publish the entire story on this Blog.</p><p>Before I get to the boring bit and describe the photos, I'd like to make a plea for feedback, <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">apart</span> from a few of you, Ken, Gary, Mike and Bill, hardly anyone leaves comments, questions or even abuse. This is a funny old hobby and <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">there</span> aren't many of us across the world that share this strange common interest, so let's get communicating then! This old world wide web thingy is an amazing vehicle for linking people together, to share ideas and news, most of the information I have been able to gather, I initially garnered from the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Internet</span>, especially on the American forces, militia in particular. Helpful people from the other side of the pond from Surrey, England were generous with information and support and I would not have embarked on this particular conflict without their help. Let's keep "talking" to each other, so please leave a comment or ask a question............................Rant over.</p><p>So a quick run through the photos.</p><p> </p><p>First up some US infantry, sorry the photo is so dark, but stick <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">with</span> it. We tried to photo the whole lot together, 2 companies each of 20 men plus officer NCO and drummer, but the picture didn't work somehow, so you have this one with the chaps advancing into shadow. The mounted officer is something of a Frankenstein monster, his body <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">apart</span> from right arm is <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Historex</span>, the arm in question and sword are HELMET, the hat is from a Prince August metal casting and the horse is from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Italeri</span>. </p><p>The following two pics are the finally completed British infantry company that I plan to use both in North America and in the Peninsular. So as per our rules <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">there</span> are the usual 20 men officer sergeant and drummer. The officer seem previously on a Blog near here is <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">Barzo</span> with <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">Historex</span> upper works, the drummer has Marx legs, a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">Timpo</span> drum. all the rest are HELMET parts. Th idea of using different legs was to produce a figure slightly shorter than hos colleagues, in the event a miscalculation meant that he ended up as tall as <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">everyone</span> else ho hum!</p><p> </p><p>Lastly two British light dragoons, officer and trumpeter. These are both <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">unashamedly</span> HELMET through and through. I made them to lead the new <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">Italeri</span> figures which are musician and leader less, it seemed a good way to impart some variety into the unit, now all I have to do is paint the unit.</p><p> </p><p>So remember be good and hope that Santa is taking notice and is already thinking of leaving something special under the tree for you to open on Christmas morning. I'm hoping so too.</p><p>Let's keep in touch, thanks and take care</p><p> </p><p>Eric</p>Old Sillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00711483319553667661noreply@blogger.com6
